区别：
1.区域划分不同。
north有时是从行政区划分的角度讲的；有时是将某地视为整体，指该地区具有较明显的、相同的、自然或社会特征。
northern 往往是单纯从地理方位讲，常表示方向和位置，无政治意义或社会意义，表述的是一个相对而又比较模糊的概念，是一种不明确的划分。
2.用法不同。
表示方位的名词north一般应与定冠词the连用。如：The scheme mostly benefits people in the North and Midlands.该方案主要的受益者是北部和中部地区的人们。
northern是形容词，用来修饰名词。如：Their two children were immigrants to Northern Ireland from Pennsylvania他们的两个孩子是从宾夕法尼亚州***到北爱尔兰的。
3.词性不同。
North都是既可以是名词，也可以是形容词。名词前一般加the。in the north 意思是：在北方。如：I live in the north. 我住在北方。
north是名词一般情况下和介词连用，比如Scotland lies in the north of UK.
northern是形容词，用来修饰名词，比如Scotland lies in the northern part of UK.
